Freelancing and finding your space - being a marginalised voice in journalism.
(slowthai clash magazine)

funding from brand partnerships

latest print cover - literacy, numeracy
can feel isolated when marginalised in a creative industry - find yourself within a community if not make that community.

GETTING INTO JOURNALISM AS A MARGINALISED VOICE
- start writing, in any way you can
-if the place doesn' exist, create it
-find publications that want your voice
-play to your strengths (figure out what are your unique selling point, figuring that music is what she wanted to write about, what are the issues in music that she is interested about? is it being written by others?)
- look into placements and funds: positive action scheme, journalism diversity fund, creative access.

- networking is important - go along to events, seeking out like-minded people.
- networking while you're at Uni - maintaining connections, be mindful of contacts.
- what unique skills you can bring that they might not already have
- BE NICE :) DON'T BE A DICK :)
- building relationship with publicists, get to know PRs too.

PITCHING
- know the editors and publications that you're pitching to, always try to research them and work out what they look for and the topics/angles they might like
- try to have a news peg - which involves following and thinking about current affairs, culture etc and considering how your idea might fit this

- don't repeat what everyone else is saying, think about new, different angles.
- engage with your weird fringe thought or an unpopular opinion on a topic

POTENTIAL WORK ISSUES
- may work in a place where you don't agree with the views or what they stand for/done in the past
- your name will be on that with the brand
- if your freelance there's the fear of not being commissioned - stick to your guns.
- the precarity of work: impact on mental health, on your income.

TRENCH - music
amarlia
A-Z Mag
salty - content through new letters.

summary

when coming to this lecture, I was extremely excited to hear that we would be able to gain some advice and insight from some of the girls from Gal-Dem, I find that what they base their whole company off of to be inspiring and wholesome as what they represent and stand for often isn't on the forefront of topics spoken about, although in today's age there are improvements, and more companies are making a conscious effort to become more inclusive.

Tara expressed in the lecture to find what you're interested about, what you are passionate about and to play to your strengths, your unique selling point as that will be where your motivation lies to write and research. She expressed that networking is important, to be kind to those in the industry as often this industry will benefit you a lot more being about to collaboratively work with people.
