Mood Board 4 - MARGARET THATCHER

Moodboard 4, Historical Context:
Margaret Thatcher

When choosing what to do for my Historical Context I initially looked at The Political Group - The National Front - as it tied into the movement I'd chosen of the skinhead subculture. as that subculture was the reaction of the NF. However, when doing my research for the Skinhead subculture I had already linked and spoke about the impact of the National Front at the time.
I found out that there were 4 major riot outbreaks in the '70s, 3 were responsible by the National Front and the 4th one also being a racial riot.

1974 - Red Lion Square Disorder happened following a march by counter-fascists against the National Front.
1976 - Riots during the Notting Hill Carnival.
1977 - The Battle of Lewisham occurred when the metropolitan police attempted to facilitate a march by the National Front.
1979 - Southall riots during an anti-Nazi league demonstration in opposition to the National Front.

When researching what else was happening during the 1970s, I made a list of possible routes, looking at the Inflation during the UK economy at the time,

I felt as though Margaret Thatcher's election in the 70s was significantly important as a Historical event as not only was she the first female Prime Minister, changing leaderships for females, however, she also changed and shaped the UK economy during the 80/90s to what it is now.
From one of the Lectures ran by Karen, she spoke briefly about how political change also had an impact on how we manufacture goods today as it was slowly being introduced in the UK. Margaret Thatcher was one of the people in charge that encouraged this - as a result, many blue-collar workers lost their jobs due to manufacturing goods being a lot cheaper abroad, this closed many coal mine industries as well as the textiles industry.

WEEK 10 - 35/53 Contemporary Subcultures.

𝕄𝕒𝕣𝕘𝕒𝕣𝕖𝕥 𝕋𝕙𝕒𝕥𝕔𝕙𝕖𝕣, 𝟙𝟡𝟟𝟡-𝟙𝟡𝟡𝟘 [CHOSEN HISTORICAL CONTEXT] - In 1975 Margaret Thatcher became the leader of the Conservative Political Party in the UK, later in 1979, she was elected Prime Minister, being the first female Prime Minister in the UK. Although many of her political views were not implemented till the 80s/90s, her election in the 70s lead to a change in the UK economy to how it is now - many blue-collar workers lost their jobs as she introduced manufacturing goods from other countries due to the decrease in price to make the goods, this in today’s time was the starting point of fast fashion, making garments overseas for lower prices.

Final Moodboard:
For this mood board, I kept the tones and colour palette quite muted and cool-toned, especially with the blue I felt as though it represented not only the colour of the conservative political party she represented, however, just the idea of the royal blue colour embolised Britan, with a slight monarchy feel. The image of the far right corner was emphasised with repetition as it also shows the leadership power she had - as well as the crowd being men, it shows up until this point Britain was ruled by men.
