1970'S RESEARCH - Designers, Icons and Musicians
I began tackling this brief by finding something that defined the 1970's weather that being an image or something like a description. I've chosen to look into all aspects of 70s fashion and then choose the topic of my 4 mood boards on something that interested me the most.
WHAT I FOUND:
I looked at the era's popular musicians, Icons and Designers first.
ABBA was the first kind of band that I looked at as they embolised the style that was most popular early on in the 70s, this including
looking into designers I came across Diane Von Furstenberg's wrap dress, these dresses were designed and established in the 1970s and the style of the dress is still sold to this day.
Cher/Sonny & Cher - Cher being an iconic figure for fashion.
linked to the designer Bob Mackie as he designed most of Cher's pieces.
looked into the sheer/transparent dresses and clothes and found that Yves Saint Laurent and Ossie Clark pioneered this trend by creating more garments that were intended to be worn in a risky manner
the trendy jumpsuit look was worn frequently by the icon David Bowie, who also at the time stood for a political view around gender fluidity and having that androgynous look.
(Many of my research finding information have been posted onto my Instagram account - @fmc_josephinewang - along with an image to visualise the context).
WHAT I THINK I WILL BASE MY DESIGNER MOOD BOARD ON:
Then went on to look at the Punk scene starting off with researching about Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren
found a substantial amount on how they met and how their career took place, a lot of the time Westwood would create the garments that McLaren designed. McLaren became the manager of The Sex Pistols in which they would wear most of these garments giving them exposure that Westwood and McLaren needed in order for people to recognise them as a designer - Westwood's style at the time was very controversial and I think that's why a lot of people remember her contribution towards the 70s as she completely went against the - at the time popular - 1970s hippy ethos.
Also found a couple of garments that were Iconic pieces of Westwood at the time, due to the context and nature of it, this being the Nazi Swatchka T-Shirt, her visible 'Tits Tee' and "God Save The Queen".
A thing that came up was their store located on 430 King's Road, Chelsea. Previously called Too Fast To Live, Too Young To Die the shop went through several name changes, the one after being SEX, but I haven't looked into too much detail into it as of yet.
THE EARLY 70'S REFERENCING
WHAT I FOUND:
- There were two kinds of main subgenres; The Hippy trend that carried on from the 60s and the return of the Punk/Rock 'n' Roll era.
- For women who still carried through the 1960's popular styles, they tend to have worn bell-bottom pants, frayed jeans, maxi dresses, jumpsuits, midi skirts, tie-dye, peasant blouses (maybe even sheer/mesh), platform boots/shoes. Some of the accessories included scarves and headbands.
- Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren did not create the punk scene, however, contributed to the driving force of it in the 1970s.
